Tips for Wintertime Wood Splitting

A colder than normal winter can deplete firewood supplies sooner than expected. If so, then you’ll need to replenish the supply to last until the spring thaw.

dr power winter_woodpileSplitting wood during winter presents a different set of circumstances than when the chore was done during the warmer months of late summer and early fall. There is more to getting the job done than wearing a coat, gloves and hat.

Follow these tips from DR Power and your time outdoors will result in a safe, efficient means of splitting firewood for the remaining cold months ahead. To see the complete line of log splitters offered by DR Power, click here.

Thaw it out

The hydraulic oil used to operate a log splitter converts to sludge when the temperature drops below 41 degrees. Here are two options to prevent the frustrating scenario. First, you can install a magnetic block heater and turn it own when the log splitter is not in use. Storing the splitter indoors is another option. However, never run a gasoline powered log splitter indoors, because it emits deadly carbon monoxide.

Bundle up

Layered clothing is best for outdoor chores in the winter. Remove a layer as your body temperature increases with the work. The hands are the most important assets for the chilly chore of splitting wood during winter. Heavy insulated gloves hinder finger movement and aren’t practical for operating the machine parts. The same applies to the everyday gloves worn around town. The best choice is a pair of utility gloves. These are designed to provide adequate finger movement while protecting the hands. Look for a pair of utility gloves with a wrist strap and rubberized palm for additional protection from the cold.

Weather watch

The most practical tip for splitting wood during winter is timing. Watching the weather forecast. Plan your outdoor chore on a sunny day when the temperature is warmer than normal. On those days, the odds of starting the log splitter are better than on a cold, gray day. You’ll also be more comfortable and perhaps even last longer outdoors before retreating to the warmth of the fireplace.
