WHETHER YOUR ZIP CODE CAN DETERMINE YOUR HEALTH

AND HOW WALMART IS MOVING IN

ALL NEW EPISODE AIRS OCTOBER 7 AT 8:30 PM

LOS ANGELES, October 4 – This week on SoCal Connected, correspondent Angie Crouch takes a look at fat and skinny ZIP codes and the correlation between park space and overall health in “Park Poor,” while correspondent Judy Muller investigates a new plan by Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, to move into neighborhoods previously denied to them in “Big Box Invasion.” The all-new episode airs Friday, October 7 at 8:30 p.m.

“PARK POOR”

When it comes to green space, Los Angeles is one of the poorest major cities in the nation. Correspondent Angie Crouch delves into new research that shows a direct correlation between income, race, health, and the availability of community park space. Activists have taken the lead as the city and county lag, but they often face a multitude of political road blocks. Tune in to find out which LA County cities are living fit and which are living large. The producer is Karen Foshay.

“BIG BOX INVASION”

For years, Walmart has weathered protests, ballot measures, and resolutions designed specifically to keep big box chains out of LA County. With only a handful of stores spread throughout the densely populated area, the megastore may have found a way to open new stores in the wake of the recession and glut of commercial real estate on the market. Walmart’s new strategy is centered on purchasing space left vacant by defunct retailers like Mervyns without public hearings, zoning permits, and environmental impact studies that have prevented the retailer from opening shop in the past.

While protesters are making noise, other city officials are happy to have Walmart as their neighbor, including the jobs they create and their low cost products and groceries.   Correspondent Judy Muller reports. The producer is Karen Foshay.

“THE UNGER REPORT”

This week, satirist Brian Unger weighs in on the hysteria surrounding the upcoming release of the iPhone 5.

The all-new episode airs Friday, October 7 at 8:30 p.m.

The Executive Producer of SoCal Connected is Bret Marcus. Co-Executive Producer is Justine Schmidt. Anchor is Val Zavala.

California Museum exhibiting Tantric Paintings from Rajasthan

Posted on 04 October 2011 by tom

The Santa Monica Museum of Art (SMMOA) in California is currently organizing “Tantra Song: Contemporary Tantric Paintings from Rajasthan” till December 10.

This is a collection of 39 anonymous works from India; made in tempera, gouache, and watercolor on salvaged paper. “The process of painting these works is part of a spiritual practice” and they are “anointed for use as spiritual objects”, the Museum announcement says.

This rare lineage of Tantric art evolved from seventeenth-century, and these deeply symbolic paintings, used to awaken heightened states of consciousness, include a range of familiar geometric forms, each imbued with spiritual meaning, symbolically represent goddess Shakti, Lord Shiva, etc.

Applauding SMMOA for exhibiting Hinduism focused art, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that art had a long and rich tradition in Hinduism and ancient Sanskrit literature talked about religious paintings of deities on wood or cloth.

Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, urged major art museums of the world, including Musee du Louvre and Musee d’Orsay of Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Los Angeles Getty Center, Uffizi Gallery of Florence (Italy), Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern of London, Prado Museum of Madrid, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, etc., to frequently organize Hindu art focused exhibitions, thus sharing the rich Hindu art heritage with the rest of the world.

SMMOA, founded in 1984, claims to foster “diversity, innovation, and discovery in contemporary art” and celebrate “expanding boundaries; exploring individual differences; enhancing public knowledge of art; and broadening the art experience”. Elsa Longhauser is the Executive Director while Peter A. Gelles is Board of Directors President.

Boeing Company Slashes 900 Jobs in Long Beach

Posted on 24 January 2011 by johnd

The Boeing Company announced January 20 that due to a decline in orders for its C-17 cargo planes, it will cut 900 jobs from its 3,700-employee facility in Long Beach, and may close its plant completely unless it receives additional orders from the federal government or foreign governments.

Boeing’s Long Beach facility is one of Southern California’s last remaining aircraft manufacturing facilities. Before Boeing and McDonnell Douglas merged, McDonnell Douglas built planes at the factory that were used by the United States and its allies to win World War II.

Other Southern California aerospace companies also have announced plans to lay off workers. In 1990, more than 160,000 aerospace jobs existed in Southern California. Now, it is estimated that there are fewer than 48,000 jobs in the industry.

The C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane, which has been in production since the 1990s, has the ability to take off and land on short runways, and has been used by NATO, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. (Source: Los Angeles Times, January 20.)

Irvine Chamber of Commerce Reaching Out to “Micro Entrepreneurs”

Posted on 16 January 2011 by johnd

The Irvine Chamber of Commerce  is sponsoring a new online community for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The “Micropreneur Community” provides small-scale entrepreneurs the opportunity to share ideas, seek solutions to problems, and network with other entrepreneurs and professionals from many disciplines.

“We use the term “Micropreneur” to mean an entrepreneur with a limited number of employees,” said Christopher Lynch, Vice President of Business and Economic Development, Irvine Chamber of Commerce. “Micropreneurs can be in any industry such as manufacturing, services, design, and so forth. The point of commonality is that small-scale entrepreneurs face many of the same challenges of limited resources and a need for support that this community will help to solve,” he added.

The Micropreneur Community is based upon the new social network site, oGoing.com. The site provides users with their own private community instead of a broad public community open to everybody. “We want enough privacy so that users can share a certain amount of confidential business information between one another without the information automatically being broadly available on the web,” said Lynch. “The community is open to anybody, but we want them to create a user name and password before they can view postings and share their comments,” he stated.

The Micropreneur Community is open to entrepreneurs from any industry segment and interested advisors. Members need not be members of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce or even be located within Orange County, Calif. to participate.

Go to http://micropreneur.ogoing.com and create a unique username and password to be granted access to and participate in the Micropreneur Community
