Dr. Steven Nash gives a talk on the work of artist Wayne Thiebaud, in conjunction with the exhibition Wayne Thiebaud: American Memories at Laguna Art Museum. Dr. Nash is the author of Wayne Thiebaud: A Paintings Retrospective, published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same title which was organized by Dr. Nash in 2000. It was the first major survey of work by this famous American figurative artist.
Dr. Steven Nash is the JoAnn McGrath Executive Director of the Palm Springs Art Museum. He has been a museum professional for 30 years, and has held positions at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He was also the founding director of the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas. The subjects of the many exhibitions Dr. Nash has organized or co-organized include the artists Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo, Pierre Bonnard, Henry Moore, Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Arneson, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Matisse, and Richard Diebenkorn; modern European sculpture; landscape art in California; masterworks from the Musee d’Orsay in Paris; the history of Crown Point Press in San Francisco; and numerous contemporary Californian artists. Each of these exhibitions featured catalogues that Dr. Nash authored solely or in part. His work on Pablo Picasso includes three exhibitions and catalogues: Picasso the Printmaker, Picasso the Sculptor, and Picasso and the War Years 1937-1945.
Dr. Nash received his B.A. cum laude at Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. in art history at Stanford University.
