Stanley Cup Finals Looks Like Clash of the Titans on Ice

Stanley Cup Finals Looks Like Clash of the Titans on Ice

By Amy Lignor

Oh, yeah. Hockey always gives some thrills and some chills – we all know this. It may take a great deal of time to see a ‘wowzer’ in tennis or golf, but hockey brings it slamming right at you.

However, even looking back on all the history books and listening to the experts, etc., the Bruins versus the Blackhawks is turning out to be something that video games should be made of.

Three games have passed, of course, but the first two were so amazing that the Stanley Cup Finals suddenly became the only thing to watch on TV. (To be fair, it is the only thing worth watching, but this is quite the show). Watching a Stanley Cup Finals that began with a first game leading into a triple-overtime, with the Blackhawks finally winning 4-3, was more than good TV.. It reminded one of thoseBlackhawks football games where both teams had the chance to end the game over and over again, yet finished in a tie no matter what they tried.

Finishing the game in regulation became an impossibility in game one. It was almost as if the light and the dark side were battling in some icy pit. All it was missing was the shining glare of the swords.

Give it to the goaltenders – talk about a game where they earned their money as well as the rest of the money being paid out to their teammates. The best chance of the first overtime came around eight-minutes; let’s just say the goaltender made a save that should be printed on a poster and put into a museum for future reference.

Shots from both ends, saves, stops – every single moment, either the Bruins or the Blackhawks would just miss that one shot that would call it a game. Both of these teams came in with a fire and a passion in their souls that hasn’t been seen in a good, long time. This was the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup Finals history, and it will be remembered forever.

Then…Game 2 arrived. Apparently both of the teams had spoken in their locker rooms and decided that the fans were really going to get their money’s worth from both of them. One game going into overtime simply was not going to be enough, even though it seemed like they’d already played a full seven games in just the first one.

Unlike the elongated first game, number two was a bit on the quieter side. Instead of the regulation sixty minutes, they took 66 minutes and 12 seconds. The Bruins’ Daniel Paille scored the goal in the very first overtime to call it a night.

Without even counting yesterday’s game, this best-of-seven series is a thrill to see. Game 4 will arrive on Wednesday, and it is beyond clear that this is one hockey match-up that will go down in history as being one of the most exciting.

Each team, thus far, has gone into survival mode more than once. Each one of these players has so much fire in their eyes that it’s a wonder that the ice itself hasn’t melted by now.

There are even lists already coming out about unbelievable statistics when it comes to this match-up. Tuuka Rask is on that list, having 92 saves in just the first two games of the Finals. (I believe a huge pay raise is coming in his future). Patrice Bergeron has taken 68 face-offs in just the first two, winning 42 of them. (Again, another check). Duncan Keith has played 90 shifts, clocking in over 80 minutes of ice time in just the first two games. (This guy has to be seriously exhausted).

There are stats after stats regarding the first two games of this series, and every record seems to be up for grabs. But whatever happens, at least one thing will be more than true when all is said and done – both teams will be giving out A LOT of pay raises.
