The Films
Still, 11 min
Take a moment to understand what you know about the ocean and explore that moment through photography and film. Develop this interest into a passion for the ocean, and discover what can be passed on. This exquisite portrayal of a free diver’s ocean experience defines the meaning of success simply in existence while disregarding the superficial, the unnecessary, and the complicated

Isla Coronado Ghost Net, 8 min

Divers mount an expedition to retrieve masses of abandoned fishing gear and wildlife-entangling nets. These persistent killing machines render no benefit, but do great harm. Off the Baja California coast, the Ocean Defenders Alliance struggles to make the seas safe once again. The filmmaker will be on hand for a Q & A following the screening.

Majestic Plastic Bag, 4 min

A nature mockumentary about the migration of a plastic bag, brings awareness of plastic pollution and support for California Bill AB 1998. Will the bag make it out of the asphalt jungle and past the killer “teacup” yorkie and into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
California Hope Spots, 19 min

California boasts the first and largest network of Marine Protected Areas, stretching along our coastline from Oregon to Mexico. Through these living laboratories, scientists, fishermen, and conservationists work together to manage marine resources and find a balance that respects the values and interests of all stakeholders.

Laguna Bluebelt: Laguna’s Marine Reserve, 10 min
A compelling, educational look at Laguna’s Marine Protected Areas with stunning video of Laguna’s spectacular marine life.

Oaks to Otters, 9 min

The story of Elkhorn Slough is an exceptionally successful effort to create an estuary and watershed that is beneficial to nature while remaining a working landscape. This reserve is home not only to 350 species of birds and the largest concentration of Southern Sea Otters in California but also to working ranches and organic berry farms.

Whale Fall, 4 min

Is there life after death? You bet there is—an afterlife of abundance! This animated short depicts how one whale’s death creates a complex, thriving underwater necropolis capable of sustaining an entire community of other sea organisms. Nothing ghoulish here! It is a delight of visual storytelling, lyrically presented and beautifully scored.

Come Hell or High Water, 45 min
Take away the board in surfing and you are left with the raw power of human ability. The exploration of bodysurfing showcases the speedo wearing dudes who have nothing but pride and a deep affinity for all things ocean. The limits of bodysurfing are undefined as this film truly investigates the depths of human ingenuity.
