Mull-It-Over Trim Caps Sound Great for Healthcare

It is one of life’s truisms that you never know what problem might be lurking just around the corner, or perhaps, in the next room. Take for instance Bruce Burgess’ experience at the building site of a new children’s hospital constructed with a glass curtain wall facade.
While visiting the site, Burgess, an engineer and construction company executive, noticed that sound could “leak” from one room to the next. He soon discovered that the problem was caused by high STC-rated drywall partitions being terminated into a vertical mullion. The light-gage, hollow mullion was allowing noise to flank the end of the partition and leak into the adjacent room, which, while annoying in any situation, is a potentially much more serious issue in a healthcare setting.
Most of you have probably had a similar experience while waiting your turn in a doctor’s office. Sound leakage from room to room is a prevalent problem not only in healthcare facilities but in government buildings, office buildings, bedrooms and anywhere else where privacy matters.
But Burgess knew that given the current climate in the medical community regarding patient privacy that this was a huge problem that needed to be addressed.
There were, of course, legal issues to be considered by administrators, especially since the introduction of HIPAA privacy laws, and by builders responsible for building to code, but considering the sensitive nature of many of the issues discussed by patients and their doctors, there was a huge personal downside to the sound transfer problem as well.
Although Burgess immediately recognized the need for a solution, he found that there was nothing currently in the marketplace to remedy the situation. “Being in the construction business for so many years… I knew this was a problem, but when I researched a possible solution, I couldn’t find one, so I invented one,” said Burgess.
Thus was born Mull-It-Over Products, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and their patent-pending Mull-It-Over Sound Barrier Trim Caps which prevent sound transmission through the mullions in buildings with glass facades.
A standard mullion has a sound transmission class rating of 28, well below the FGI guideline requirement of STC 45 for patient, exam and consult rooms, but with the Mull-It-Over Mullion Trim Cap installed, this STC rating increases to 57.
FGI guidelines for healthcare construction and International Building Code for multi-family housing have minimum STC requirement s for demising walls. When tested as an assembly, minimum code requirements will not be met if a demising wall terminates into an exposed mullion. Mull-It-Over Sound Barrier Mullion Trim caps solve this problem.
