J-E-T-S – Jets, Jets…Jets??

by Amy Lignor

What goes around comes around? Karma is just as real as the long line at the DMV? Joe Namath visited a New Orleans ‘seer’ over the summer and did some sort of mystical spell that would resurrect his old team?

There are answers galore, yet everyone still has their eyebrow in the air this Monday morning wondering which reason sounds more nylegitimate. You see, no matter how your eyes are bulging out of your skull right now; no matter how far your mouth is hanging toward the carpet – the Jets DID beat the New England Patriots in overtime.

The Jets have not won against the Pats for a good, long time; in fact, it’s probably the same length of time that the DMV has had long lines. But…now the Jets have been victorious.

This was one game that could not possibly have been called. All experts – as always – said the Pats would win. Not a shocker, considering you are talking about a Jets team that has been smashed, burned, and thrown into the bottom of all sports categories. They have been teased and taunted. They had to live through the Tebow genre (atrocity to some; correct call to others); and the QB butt implant will forever be etched on peoples’ memories.

However, rookie QB Geno Smith is at the helm now and things seem to be turning around. Geno has kept quiet while slapping a lot of snooty faces in the NFL; he has crept along gathering four wins for a team that truly thought the word ‘winless’ would accompany them this season. And by beating the Patriots, Geno has proven to one and all that even the brightest star QB can have an off day.

But Brady can’t take all the blame for this one. He was kept to a 50% completion rate by the Jets zealous defense – which is unheard of for him. And last week, even though he came out of nowhere in the last few seconds to teach an undefeated team the hard-earned lesson that he is STILL a force to be reckoned with, Brady simply couldn’t get the ball on target to his receivers yesterday.

The yellow flags were flying everywhere as well. It seemed a great deal of the time that the Pats’ players were creating ‘made-up’ penalties. A great many will yell about the final flag thrown for unsportsmanlike conduct, called on a rookie for pushing his own player in the back, for a long time to come. Automatic fifteen-yard penalty and a first down for the Jets. The field-goal kicker appeared once again and – Presto! – the Jets beat one of the NFL’s ‘best’ in overtime.

Brady has been tested this year. He’s had to deal with a team that’s experiencing all kinds of difficulties; from players being out on the injured list to players being downright history because of major crimes. He did the honorable thing (that most would not do), and extended his contract, helping his coach with finances, etc., just to do all he could to keep the Patriots among the elite.

But out of nowhere the Jets seem to have come to terms with their recent, slightly-embarrassing, past and, behind Geno Smith and Chris Ivory – the Jets’ running back who just won’t go down no matter how many opponents try – the team has literally reached their hands out of the manmade hole they dug and have seen the light. After yesterday, it is absolutely believable that Brady’s personal Halloween nightmare will not be Freddy Krueger like the rest of us, but the man they call Ivory.

Just remember, fans. The way this season is going there are NO ‘givens.’ Even when you speak about Peyton Manning and how wonderful and amazing he is; he, too – just like Brady – can have an off day while an opponent has a great day with Lady Luck on their side.

Joe Namath is smiling with pride right now – as are all the New York Jets’ fans who have had to put up with the constant ribbing. THIS is their moment to shine. Congrats!

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy
