Helen Douglas Offers YA Magic in After Eden

It’s 2012 in the small British town of Perran. Eden and her best friend Connor, who she’s known since preschool, live mundane TOMAfterEdenlives that include studying for Year Eleven exams, hanging out with their friends, and being regular teenagers. Eden has had a bit of a rough road, considering her parents died in an accident and she’s being raised by an aunt who has a boyfriend named Travis who’s beyond annoying. But, Eden makes due.

One day a muscled, stunning young man by the name of Ryan Wetland appears at school. He has a strange accent and is so beautiful that most of the females fall for him on sight. The person Ryan takes up with, however, is Eden. She doesn’t quite understand, seeing as that she’s not the most popular or the most beautiful.

As they get to know each other, Eden finds Ryan’s back story more than a bit curious. Although he says he’s from a small town in New Hampshire, his accent is anything but American. And when she talks about foods or mentions history (i.e., anything from hamburgers to Hitler), Ryan doesn’t seem to know what she’s talking about.

All Ryan is truly engaged with is astronomy – a science geek in a quarterback’s body. But it turns out that Ryan has a reason for his oddities; he comes from the future and he’s there to stop Connor from discovering something that will, one day, destroy Earth and everyone on it.

When Eden finds out the secret, she must change her beliefs and choose between her best friend and a stranger she’s falling madly in love with.

This is a good YA; the characters are humorous and the plot offers a great deal of information about conservation. By touching on this subject, the reader not only gets an interesting story, but also a real education on what ‘could’ happen if protecting Earth remains at the bottom of our ‘things to do’ list.
