Greener Ammo is in the Spotlight for 2014

 by James Moore

Green ammo has been spoken about before. The U.S. Army has been working on making sure they can literally ‘get the lead out’ when it comes to the ammunition they will be utilizing in the future.

For those who haven’t heard, the bullets will be ‘green’ – completely lead-free and environmentally-friendly. The move to ‘green’ ammo is actually the idea of the U.S Department of Defense. It is a program that was instigated to find a way to stop the use of any and all hazardous materials when it comes to small arms ammunition and the manufacturing of small arms ammo.

The goals of this program are basically to erase any substances that deplete the ozone. They want to stop using volatile organic compounds in the manufacturing process and remove heavy metals. Any expert in science will tell you that these particular metals have been one of the catalysts that cause extreme difficulties to the environment.

By continuing to manufacture ammunition as we have been for the last hundred years or so, the manufacturing facilities creating Speedball_3D rendering_flatammunition continue to emit hazardous wastes and emissions into the air. The ammunition once used also was found to be contaminating shooting ranges. Potential health hazards also rose, considering there’s no way to dispose of unused lead ammunition without taking taxpayers dollars (a lot of taxpayers dollars), in order to do so.

As with all industries in this country, the military branch came on board with their own green initiative and have been working on a successful outcome. It is stated that the Army’s Picatinny Arsenal is credited as working on a ‘green’ version of the M80A1 7.62 mm bullet. Their success is incredibly important, considering the fact that this is the ammunition that will be used by our troops next year.

There have been small successes already in other varieties of ammunition. It was in 2010, that the Army began using a ‘greener’ 5.56 mm M855A1 Enhanced Performance Round; which is ammunition where the slug made of lead was replaced with a slug made of copper. Not only did this new ammo help the environment in many ways, but the soldiers who most definitely need the ammunition to perform correctly on the  battlefield, found the new ‘green’ ammo to their liking.

‘Green’ bullets were raved about because of their enhanced performance standards. However, reports did appear in 2005, after the M855A1 ammo first came out, that seemed to negate some of that fanfare. Headlines emerged that scared the families of our soldiers when Army officials said, at that time, the M855A1: “has not been providing the ‘stopping power’ the user would like at engagement ranges less than 150 yards.”

This is most likely the strongest debate when it comes to ‘green’ industries, and how they perform better by providing this world with environmentally-friendly products.

It will be interesting to see what news comes forth before the handing out of more ‘green’ ammo in 2014. After all, these are our soldiers. Many have given their lives for this country and we honor them. The last thing we want is for them to be given anything substandard.

Research continues, and the Green Bullets Program is focusing on making sure that the ammunition given to troops in 2014 will be the safest, and best working ammo possible.
