Green Things to Do in the Office

If you have influence over a large office, bring these ideas to your boss, and offer to institute them, or make sure they take place: they will both reduce your office’s carbon imprint and save your company money. Even if you have a very small office, the following ideas will make a big difference!

The Electronics and Set-up

(1) Sell back old mobile phones. Most manufacturers buy back old phones, and you can recoup monies for updated versions.

(2) Check out recycling all mechanics, especially old computers, in your locale.

(3) Don’t buy a fax machine: simply scan and efax.

(4) Bleed your radiators at the beginning of the colder season. This will eliminate air that has gotten into the coils.

(5) Encourage your suppliers to take back packaging.

(6) Understand your energy bills and consult your suppliers to determine how useage can be reduced or avoided.

(7) Charge appliances overnight, for lower rates, and cheaper electricity.

Lighting

(1) Install light dimmers, to adjust for the varying levels of natural light in a room.

(2) Display Lighting should only be used as highlighting and not for general illumination. If you are in hospitality or retail, keep lights low until showtime or opening of the store.

Use only vending machines that have nonperishable items, or make sure it can be put in a timer for overnight or weekends.

(3) Use the right kind of light bulbs. Invest in CFL, halogen, or

LED lighting to ensure long-term savings.

(4) Install motion sensors lighting for seldom-used areas and plant room lighting.

(5)) Install timers and smart control systems, to switch off devices when you are not using them. This works especially well with kitchen appliances.

More Ideas

(1) Recycle and save on waste disposal costs.

(2) Sell back your empty ink cartridges.

(3) Install motion sensor taps to turn off running water when not in use.

(4) Install electric hot water taps. Regular taps take up to 15 seconds to heat water.

(5) Use both sides of your paper when printings. Use the back of old documents instead of notepads.

(6) Save and reuse packaging and postal package envelopes.

(7) Avoid paper or plastic cups, and have everyone bring their own mug.

(8) Salvage office furniture from liquidation auctioneers and thrift stores.

(9) As you upgrade, recycle old office furniture.

(10) Use non-toxic finishes and Eco paint.

(11) Position all desks by natural light.

(12) Make sure radiators and heaters aren’t obstructed by office furniture.

Make a schedule, budget, and begin to institute these practices, and you will see green results right away, saving both money and our planet.
