Year Round Zoysia Grass Maintenance Guide

Posted on 26 May 2010 by zdenka

Maintaining a beautiful Zoysia grass lawn is simple, if you know what to do and when to do it. By breaking down simple maintenance steps into seasonal groups, you will have a healthier, more beautiful lawn.

The easiest lawn care months, December through February, are a great place to start. Mow only when the lawn starts to turn green, but never when it’s dormant and don’t fertilize during this time. Occasional watering may be needed, especially if the weather is warmer and windier than usual. By applying herbicides for clover, chickweed, henbit and bluegrass, you can get a jump on early weeds.

Moving into the busier spring months, March through May, requires more work for a Zoysia lawn. The grass will need to be cut before it’s over two inches tall and the clippings should be left to recycle into the lawn. Fertilization is necessary at this time for a nice, year-round Zoysia grass lawn; fifteen pounds of fertilizer per 1,000 feet will suffice for the first feeding. You should water until the moisture is six inches deep in the soil; if a screwdriver easily sinks six inches, you’re good. Apply herbicides for goose grass, foxtail and crabgrass and check for grubs and apply pesticides, if needed, at this time.

During the summer months, June through August, most of the maintenance is like that of the spring. Cutting, fertilizing and watering are all the same, but herbicides should be applied as needed for summer weeds like spurge, lespedeza and knotweed.

Fall months, September through November, are a time to wind down and winterize. Cutting and watering remain the same, but fertilization takes a different route. Fertilizing with eight to ten pounds of potassium sulfate or potash per 1,000 square feet should do the trick.

By following these basic seasonal guidelines, you can keep your Zoysia grass lawn beautiful and green all year long.
