A Landowner Who Set His Sights on the Moon

by Henry Morse

There are many interesting landowners out there to research, and the goals they have for their land are varied. Some utilize land as an investment opportunity; others realize the potential of helping the environment; while still others love to work the land like their forefathers and want to leave a legacy behind for their children. But there’s one landowner with far different goals; one who’s utilizing his land to reach the actual stars.

Jeff Bezos is certainly well-known, seeing as that he is the CEO of Amazon.com – the largest and most well-known retailer that rules over the World Wide Web. Bezos is the head of that internationally known empire, but his interests are more than varied.

This is one man who took his immense wealth and purchased land, utilizing many of these acres in the Lone Star State to build a spaceport. Yes, a spaceport, that will actually serve as a hub for his space exploration venture. This venture is called, Blue Origin, and the nation’s 28th largest landowner is defying critics and setting his sights on literally heading into the great beyond.

The full tally, according to reports, is that Bezos owns 290,000 acres which includes the Corn Ranch property in West Texas, home of Blue Origin. Apparently his number one site was too grounded, which brought out his passion for space.

Worth $19.1 billion (according to Forbes), Jeff Bezos has seen failure when it comes to his great dream. An unmanned spaceship was launched by Blue Origin LLC in September; however, the craft never got to where it was going. The ground crew lost contact as well as control of the vehicle right after liftoff during a test flight.

But Bezos is not done by a long shot, and space exploration is not the only thing he thinks about. Using his wealth, he has literally built0727_jeff-mackenzie-bezos-1_416x416-300x300 up a team of space exploration experts and creative inventors to build a clock that clicks once a year, designed to keep time for the next 10,000 years to come. This high-tech timepiece will be installed in a chamber located in a cave in the Sierra Diablo Mountains in West Texas when all is said and done.

Blue Origin, on his West Texas property, is also not done. Right now, the company is developing a rocket-propelled vehicle called, New Sheppard. The main purpose of the project will be to fly astronauts into sub-orbital space at ‘competitive prices.’ With Jeff Bezos’ imagination he even goes one step further; he wants to share his ideas and his inventions with the public by offering trips into space that are affordable, so no one misses out on the greatest adventure of a lifetime.

.

It’s no wonder that this landowner is the American entrepreneur who played THE key role in the expansion of e-commerce. It is quite apparent from all his projects that Bezos can consistently see the future, and wants to make sure that state-of-the-art technology continues to be discovered.

Perhaps his love of the land and what lay beyond began with his birth in New Mexico – a state that is all big sky and land as far as the eye can see. Looking up at the stars in New Mexico, many have often wondered just how far mankind could go. After all, this is also the state where Robert H. Goddard – yet another inventor and forward thinker – created and built the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket, which he successfully launched in 1926. Add to that the UFO visitors that crash-landed in Roswell, New Mexico, and you will soon understand that this is the state focusing on space travel.

There is also space exploration and invention in Bezos’ blood. His maternal grandfather was a regional director of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in Albuquerque. And when he retired to live on his ranch in West Texas, Jeff spent many summers by his side as a kid just working and learning all there was to know about things that were unknown.

The fast-thinking mind of Jeff Bezos never seems to slow down. According to his friends and family, he was always interested in science, which turned into an intense interest in computer engineering while he attended Princeton.

Whether his spaceflight company succeeds in offering the ‘Average Joe’ a way to fly into outer space remains to be seen. But considering Jeff’s absolute success in every industry he’s tried thus far – from the purchase and reinvention of land to bringing the largest retailer across the globe to the masses – he has certainly proven that he won’t give up until he’s won. Perhaps Blue Origin will add another ‘Giant Leap for Mankind’ into the history books.
