On the first Thursday of every month, the Laguna Beach Art Scene celebrates its cultural art scene at the award-winning First Thursdays Art Walk.
This event is free to the public and it’s an experience that Rachel Ray touts in a recently aired segment of “$40-A-Day” on the Travel Channel.
On August 5th, stroll and trolley around this picturesque town on a self-guided tour enjoying gallery openings, artist demonstrations and receptions, live music and refreshments.
“There is so much to see and do this month.”
- First Thursdays Art Walk president Rebecca Barber
Pre-event by City of Laguna Beach
Enjoy an art dedication and reception for a mural installation by award-winning artists Scott and Naomi Schoenherr at 5 pm, located at Forest Lane Restroom (opposite Wells Fargo, 260 Ocean Avenue). There will be a reception immediately following at the Festival of Arts grounds (650 Laguna Canyon Road).
Throughout the evening see artists in action and watch their creative process when visiting them at many galleries demonstrating their techniques and sharing their insights. Ask questions and engage the artists. The following are a few participating: Annette Wimmer at Annette Wimmer Fine Art, Chris Hooker at Laguna North Gallery; John Eagle and other resident artists at Studio 7; and sculpture demonstration by Regina Hurley at The Esther Wells Collection.
Experience performance art by Sasha Evans and Doug Miller at Studio Arts Gallery and J. Kowalski will discuss his urbanscapes at Swenson Fine Art. Each of their styles and characters are uniquely Laguna. More information can be found at firstthursdaysartwalk.com.
This jam-packed evening includes a multitude of featured galleries to see from Downtown to Gallery Row to Bluebird to Laguna Canyon Road, enhanced by performances by local musicians and gallery hospitality. Art Walk gives you access to buy original artwork of every genre from these galleries. Also, be sure to visit the Laguna Art Museum featuring “Art Shack” a group exhibition in which artists combine art and architecture and enjoy a student exhibition at the Laguna College of Art and Design.
It’s easy to get to all destinations, simply hop the FREE trolley, another distinctively Laguna experience. At any gallery also pick up an Art Walk brochure that includes a map and featuring all the evening’s special events.
Art Walk is over at 9 pm, but not the art savings! After 9 pm, head over to the world-famous Sawdust Art Festival where you will receive free admission when you present the First Thursday’s brochure at Sawdust’s box office — a $7.75 savings per person. The Sawdust will be previewing original Collector Panels during a reception at the Healy House sponsored by Laguna Culinary Arts. The Festival of Arts will also have free admission for Art Walk patrons after 9 pm.
This free and art educational event is funded by member galleries, lodging establishments, City of Laguna Beach, and Laguna Board of Realtors.
